Mustang Creek Estates of Frisco to honor female residents during Women's History Month

Posted on March 21, 2018

This month, millions of people around the country observe Women’s History Month, and Mustang Creek Estates of Frisco has joined the celebration by honoring the fascinating women in its community.

To pay tribute to its residents’ contributions, the community will host a women’s appreciation event March 30. During this event, they will honor female residents by giving them a gift of appreciation, and every woman will have the opportunity to share her life story with others.

One inspirational resident is Edith Phillips, a teaching legend from New Jersey who is now a resident of Mustang Creek Estates of Frisco. She is a retired music consultant of 40 years who left a lasting mark on the lives of many students. Phillips’ dedication to better the lives of local children led Jersey City to name a park "Dr. Edith Bland Phillips Park" in her honor. Phillips, 89, believes women should be recognized for their contributions to society.

“It feels amazing to be recognized for all my hard work, and there are so many women around the world who make tremendous sacrifices to better our lives. I believe we all, as women, should be celebrated,” Phillips said. “It is important to observe Women’s History Month, and I am excited that the team here at Mustang Creek Estates of Frisco appreciates the contributions made by women over the years. I recommend all girls and women out there be humble, respect other people and follow their dreams.”

Phillips, originally from Milwaukee, was married for 63 years to a loving husband who supported her in every step she made. She has one son and three grandchildren. She has taught every musical instrument and sings in 16 languages.

Phillips was The Jersey Journal Woman of Achievement and the recipient of the Jersey City State College Outstanding Alumnus Award in Mathematics and Music. She spent years teaching music, and many times she volunteered her time at no charge.

Phillips was inspired by her mother who taught as well. She traveled with her husband to many countries and she always took the opportunity to learn about the music of each culture. Phillips believes the most rewarding part of her career was watching her students excel and blossom into even better musicians. Her favorite instrument is the piano, and she continues to play regularly each week for the residents of Mustang Creek Estates of Frisco.

“Edith has such an inspirational story, we are truly honored to have her at the community,” said Candy Jiwa, executive director at Mustang Creek Estates of Frisco. “Our residents and team members enjoy listening to her music, and we are proud her talent is still living on here in Frisco. She is one of the many female residents who deserves to be celebrated for their hard work and dedication. We have so much to learn from all of the women, and we can’t wait to hear their stories during our special event.”
